DIY Pencil Paper Garland Supplies

  • 5 Yellow color sheets (8.5" × 11")

  • 1 Pink color sheet

  • 1 Gray color sheet

  • 1 Beige/Kraft color sheet

  • 1 Black color sheet

  • Stapler

  • Paper cutter or scissors

Tip: Cut each sheet into 4 equal strips. I fold the paper in half, then fold it in half again to create four equal sections. If you're using a paper cutter, make one sheet first, then use one of those strips as a guide (or set your cutting guide once) to quickly cut the remaining sheets to the same size.

Cut List

Yellow

  • 20 strips (5 sheets)

Pink

  • 3 strips

Gray

  • 3 strips

Beige/Kraft

  • 1 strip (cut along the 11" side for a longer piece)

Black

  • Cut 2 small triangles for the pencil tip.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Create the pink eraser by connecting 3 pink strips.

  2. Attach the gray ferrule (metal band) using 3 gray strips.

  3. Continue the chain with 20 yellow strips to create the pencil body. (Add more yellow strips if you'd like a longer garland.)

  4. Before attaching the pencil tip, cut one end of the beige strip into a point.

  5. Glue one black triangle to each side of the pointed beige strip to create the pencil tip.

  6. Attach the finished pencil tip to the end of the yellow paper chain.

💡 Budget Tip: I purchased individual cardstock sheets from Hobby Lobby for about $0.50 each. If you're making multiple paper chain designs, an assorted cardstock pack from Amazon is usually the better value.

📏 Customize the Length: Want a longer garland? Simply add more yellow strips to extend the pencil to your desired length before attaching the eraser and pencil tip. The design is easy to customize for classrooms, bulletin boards, doorways, or party backdrops.
